The lodge offers four luxurious and spacious thatched-chalets with an open-plan living and entertainment area. Each accommodating two adults and the option of snooza’s (fold up mattresses) for younger children, all accommodating up to ten guests in total (additional children on request – terms apply).

The luxury, thatched chalets have been carefully designed and positioned to maximise the spectacular views of the Pilanesberg mountains and the surrounding wildlife.

The luxurious en-suite bathrooms leave little to be desired with his and hers basins, a double shower and beautiful stone bath. And, for those wanting to fully immerse themselves in nature, there is also an outdoor shower to be enjoyed, in tandem with the sights and sounds of the wild. Each chalet also offers a tea and coffee station, bar fridge and lockable safe.

The main entertainment area is spacious and consists of a fully-fitted modern kitchen with a fridge and freezer. Boasting an automatic coffee machine, microwave and ice machine in the kitchen area, you can enjoy all of the conveniences of home-living without having to compete with other guests for the use of these facilities.

An eight-seater dining room forms the heart of the dining area, while the casual lounge lends itself to kicking-back and channel flicking – so now you can go on safari and get the score in the same weekend! The formal lounge is an area where you can relax and read, or head to the bar area for a few drinks. There are both wine and beverage fridges available for you to utilize on a self-stock basis.

The boma and braai area joins onto a large thatched lapa which offers casual seating and a large dining table for alfresco dining. If you’re not up for the afternoon game drive, spend your time lounging around the pool with a good book, or take a stroll to the thatched viewing-hide a few meters away. The lodge is surrounded by an electrified fence to keep you safe from the Big 5 animals that are regularly spotted in the area.

Take to the crystal-clear, blue water of the pool after a game drive, before enjoying an evening of stargazing, sipping drinks around the fire, and listening to the sounds of the African bush at night.

While Thutlwa Safari Lodge is available exclusively – guests can rest assured that a member of staff is on the premises 24 hours a day. The lodge is serviced daily for our guests’ convenience

Note: There is cell-phone coverage at the lodge, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi in the main area.

The freedom that comes with booking an exclusive-use lodge means you get to enjoy the entire space without being concerned about other guests and how your holiday may impact them. By choosing Thutlwa Safari Lodge you get to choose your safari times and durations, as well as who accompanies you on your drive, with small children to join at parents’ discretion. If you’d prefer to stay at the lodge with your toddler or young child while others head out, the following items are available to you on request: High chair, baby monitor, plastic dishes and cutlery, sleeping cot.

Thutlwa Safari Lodge is fully-equipped to cater for groups and families looking to get away, safari-style. While the Lodge is fully serviced daily, you are invited to make full use of the facilities on offer on a self-catering basis. Shop in advance or do some last-minute provision shopping at the nearby convenience store.

We spoiled ourselves with a great stay at Thutlwa We had a great time. We were a familiy of 8 adults and 2 children and we enjoyed the stay tremendously. Dian and Vickie were amazing and were always at hand. The facilities are more than comfortable, with a luxurious feeling, and we enjoyed every minute of it. The lodge is well equipped with anything you could possibly need (and some more) for self catering, including some appliances you probably won't need. Not joking.. we could even bake muffins. We loved it and we'll make sure to recommend it to friends and family!

"Own" your own Lodge for a couple of days! If you've ever dreamt of having a whole safari lodge in a beautiful park for yourself then Thutlwa is THE place to stay for 8 people. Situated in the Black Rhino Reserve as part of the Pilanesberg National Park Thutlwa is a self-catering lodge. This is high-end self-catering as the lodge provides everything you need - not a single item is missing. So catering for yourself in this exquisite lodge with a very well equipped and large kitchen with dining table, a TV-lounge (not that this is really needed in the bush!!), a reading, a relaxing lounge and an additional bar area (which obviously needs to be managed and "filled" by yourself and you can store all the drinks in all sorts of different fridges): all in the main building. The pool is nicely situated in front of the main building (is also well maintained) and supplements the outside area with a private Boma, Braai and outside kitchen, an outside dinner area with a large table fitting 10 people, outside lounge area and wood fired hot tub! Another highlight for sure is the private water hole which is monitored by a camera with activities transfered to the bar area on a separate screen (so you are always aware if and what is going on outside at the water hole). The 4 separate lodges (bedrooms) which are situated within easy walking distance from the main building are enormously large, stunningly equipped (with all the items you can ever think of), beautiful and spacious in- and outside showers/baths. The environment is very well maintained and clean. Another piece adding to this "wish come true": you have your own guide and can manage safaris as you like. The current ranger (Deon) and his wife Vicky are a fantastic couple and manage the lodge exclusively well! No worries about cleaning: the onsite staff do an amazing job! So in short: in case you are in for a "private safari" this is THE place to go to!

Great time We had a great time with family. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. Premises immaculate. The lodge is well equipped for self-catering even though I reckon to offer catering as an option will be an added benefit. The staff easily catered for all the ages in our group, from little children to seniors. Well done guys we will be back and will certainly recommend it to family and friends.

Great Stay At Thutlwa We had a great stay at Thutlwa Safari Lodge recently. Great service from Dian and Vickie and the rest of the team. What I enjoyed about the lodge is that we had all the normal creature comforts, but with a touch of luxury - making us feel at home!
Beautiful lodge, excellent Safari experience. This was so good, The lodge was beautiful, the Safari amazing. We stayed at the lodge for 3 nights and had the best experience. We were a party of 8 from England, and was al little worried about the self catering but we managed fine, the driver stopped at the supermarket on the way from Johannesburg. I cannot praise our guide Jacques enough, he made this experience so good for us, pointing out all things of interest, he his a very knowledgeable and interesting man. We saw lots of animals, The lion walking passed our truck was the highlight for us all I think. Thank you Jacques for making our safari something that we will remember for ever. We hope one day to be back.
Can't Beat This !! Thutlwa Safari Lodge has it all. 9 of us including two very young children, stayed here 2 weeks ago. What an experience, the Lodge and accommodation were first class. spotlessly clean, and had everything you'd expect from a 5 star hotel. Our guide and driver Dion was excellent, managing at the 11th hour to locate the elusive lions who finally came up close and personal for a lengthy photo shoot ! Dion and his partner Victoria also went above and beyond their duties by patiently chatting to the children who at times found staying quiet a little difficult. So well done and many thanks to all concerned. you really can't beat this place for a short break . .

Mrs A fantastic lodge you will not be disappointed every thing you could want and more.made to feel very welcome by the managing couple Dian and Vicky.our own hide overlooking a water hole and amazing safaris with exceptional knowledge by Dian.
Amazing location and staff We stayed at Thutlwa for 3 days and wished it was for a week instead. The lodge was large enough to comfortably house us all (and then some), the beds and bathrooms were super and the common area very spacious. Very nice bar, large dining room table, sitting room etc. The outside area / boma also perfect. But most important of all - the game drives were amazing. I cannot say enough how we enjoyed driving around with Ranger Dian, the information he shared and the respect he has for nature was the highlight of the trip. We are already making plans to come back, but only if Vicky and Dian is still there! 🙂
A piece of paradise. Thutlwa is a slice of paradise. My husband and I took our 11 month old little boy here in December. His first time to Africa. And he loved it. All the staff at the lodge are so kind, friendly and welcoming. Dian the ranger was brilliant with our little boy even with an 11 month old we still managed to see everything we could including numerous different lions and even cheetah. Dian shared all his knowledge and experiences with us it was so nice to hear stories and background on the animals. The accommodation is beautiful, it has everything we could of needed. There was fresh clean bedding a towels and everywhere was cleaned all day. There is a lovely outside are to sit and eat. There is also a hide which you can walk down to and sit and wait to see if anything walks past. We are from. England so being lucky enough to go to Africa and stay at thutlwa and see what we saw is paradise the Bush is one of my favourite place to be it holds a special place in our hearts for so many reasons. A 5* in England doesn't come close to this amazing lodge. Will definitely visit again with our little boy. Thank you for having us.
Great Stay at Thutlwa Safari Lodge Spent a great few days at Thutlwa Safari Lodge which is situated just 2 hours from Johannesburg. Its ideal for both a quick getaway with friends or overseas visitors that are looking for a safari experience. It’s situated in a Malaria free zone and the beautiful scenic Pilanesberg. Friendly staff greeted us and made us feel very welcome. The main lodge has a central location and has every amenity. Our accomodation was one of the 4 lodges situated either side of the main lodge (two on either side). All with private patio areas. Clean, well presented rooms with fresh white linen on the bed and clean towels in the lovely bathroom. Aircon, small fridge, coffee machine and a nice tea/coffee selection were to hand. Rooms were serviced daily. Large relaxing outdoor area, with braai and pool where we were able to soak up the atmosphere of the bush. A pathway led us down to a hide where we sat and waited with anticipation. We had great game drives with our game ranger Dian, who shared his knowledge and expertise with us. The bush was green and lush with lots of wild life. We were very privileged to see the big 5 in the 3 days we were there. So we had some really wonderful sightings. Dian also took the time to point out birds and interesting facts about plants etc. This is a great place for a group of friends to gather and make some lifetime memories. We will definitely look forward to returning to Thutlwa and would recommend a visit there. Thanks to all at Thutlwa who made our stay so great.
